The stadium was initially called Arnold-Schwarzenegger Stadion in honour of the city's famous hollywood actor who later became California's governor. After Stanley 'Tookie' Williams was sentenced to death in California on December 13, 2005, Schwarzenegger asked the city of Graz to change the name of the stadium dedicated to his person. However, later the naming rights of the stadium were assigned to a commercial company.
